Apple’s iOS 13.5.5 Beta 1: Audio Support Coming to Apple News+

Apple released the first public beta for iOS 13.5.5 on Monday, June 1. The update comes just hours after Apple seeded developers their first 13.5.5 beta, as well as the public release of iOS 13.5.1, which introduced a patch for the Unc0ver jailbreak exploit. It was a big day for iOS software.

It isn’t clear when Apple officially released the public beta software. 9to5Mac first reported the update at 1:40 p.m. PDT, which is quite strange for Apple. The company usually releases public betas at 1 p.m. PDT. Apple will occasionally release public betas at 10 a.m. PDT, but usually only when the company wants to put some separation between the developer and public seeds.

So far, it looks like 13.5.5 is a minor update. MacRumors reports that the beta contains images of “News + Audio” (see below). These images support an early rumor from Digiday that Apple is asking publications to work on audio versions of their stories, which would then be supported in Apple News+.

To download and install iOS 13.5.5 public beta 1, sign up through Apple’s beta site, download and install the configuration profile, then update over the air. If you already have the profile, go to Settings –> General –> Software Update to begin the installation of the latest beta build, or you can wait until it installs automatically if “Automatic Updates” is enabled.

Just updated your iPhone? You’ll find new emoji, enhanced security, podcast transcripts, Apple Cash virtual numbers, and other useful features. There are even new additions hidden within Safari. Find out what’s new and changed on your iPhone with the iOS 17.4 update.
