Best Buy is clearing out stock of the 6th generation iPad Pro, and now you can get the high-end 12.9-inch model with 2TB storage for $1,200. That’s a whopping $1,000 off the original price, but the sale is only live for today.
The model on sale has a 12.9-inch Liquid Retina XDR screen, larger than the 11-inch screen on the base iPad Pro, with a resolution of 2732 x 2048. You also get an Apple M2 chipset, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, rear 12MP and 10MP cameras, and a 12MP front-facing camera. The Type-C port can handle both USB connections and 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt. This is the model with 2TB storage and Wi-Fi connectivity, but no cellular network support.
Apple replaced the 6th generation iPad Pro last year, featuring an OLED screen and the latest M4 chipset. The OLED screen is a great upgrade, but even with ongoing sales, you’re paying at least $899 for the smaller 11-inch model with 256GB storage. The M4 chip upgrade won’t make a difference for most people—the M2 is already overpowered for most iPad functions, including video editing with Final Cut Pro. Apple still doesn’t allow its iPad tablets to do proper emulation, virtualization, software development, or other functions that would push the M-series chips to their limits.
You don’t need to worry about this older model getting cut off from software support, either. The latest iPadOS 18 update still supports the 1st generation iPad Pro from 2015, and this is the 6th generation. Apple doesn’t provide a specific support timeline for its devices, but the M2 chip is still wildly overpowered for the functionality in iPadOS, so this model should continue to receive OS updates for years to come.
It’s worth noting that this iPad doesn’t come with a keyboard case or stylus. If you want a stylus, you’ll need to get a USB-C Apple Pencil or 2nd Gen Apple Pencil, since the latest Apple Pencil Pro is not compatible with this model. There are a few keyboard cases to choose from, like the Logitech Combo Touch—I have an older version of that case for my iPad Air, and I like it. Best Buy has Apple’s own Smart Keyboard Folio on clearance for $180, but that case doesn’t have a touchpad, so you’ll need to carry around a mouse or keep using the touchscreen.
